Hello guys, in this first episode of my Afrobeat Mix & Master Series, I went live and mixed an Afrobeat instrumental from scratch—no shortcuts. I started by playing the raw beat, then I did my gain staging the same way I always do: I don’t do it on the mixer fader, I do it on the actual instrument level. From there, I balanced the drums first because once your drums, bass, and key elements are sitting right, the rest will follow. My personal goal for YouTube beats is warm mixing, so everything I did was pushing the beat to sound warm, full, and clean. I also showed you my main principle: mixing is about creating and filling spaces. I use a reference track and tonal balance because my room is treated but not up to that standard, so I like to “see” what I’m doing while I listen. The drums will occupy the lows and some highs, then I bring melodies into the midrange and pan where needed to avoid fighting. Plugin-wise, I kept it simple: sidechain on the bass (Kickstart), small EQ cuts, a bit of clipping for headroom, and some color/reverb on keys. Sometimes you don’t need to do much—just have a target, reference it, and fill the spaces.
