What Local's Want You to Know Before Visiting Colorado

Visiting Colorado is an amazing experience - no doubt about that! I’ve lived here for over 15 years and I’m still in love with the adventures in the Centennial State. You're armed with the top mistakes people make when visiting Colorado, but there’s even MORE to learn. First up, you want to make sure you check for fire bans and reservations for where you’re going - especially if you’re camping. Fire restrictions are quite common in Colorado. Search the county, national forest, or park you’re visiting and the phrase “fire restrictions.” to get the latest info. Be prepared for wildlife encounters! Elk, big horn sheep, moose, goats, and even the humble marmot can be intense to encounter. A great rule of thumb - pun intended - if you can close one eye and hold up your thumb, you should be able to cover the animal. If not, you’re too close! These animals can and do charge! Don’t get too close, and pay attention to your surroundings. Small critters such as pika, marmot, and even chipmunks DO carry the plague. Do not let these animals approach you and do NOT feed them! Your diet isn’t their natural diet and you are harming the animals. As always, visit Colorado responsibly! Always pack out your trash including water bottles, fruit peels, toilet paper, and anything else you bring with you. Leave only footprints.
