When it comes to finding the most beautiful Grand Canyon backpacking trips, it’s honestly hard to go wrong. The key to a successful trip is planning the right trip for you. If you’re new to the Grand Canyon, even if you’ve had a lot of backpacking experience, I always recommend taking extra time for your trip. This place hits differently, and off the corridor, it is much different than the Rim to Rim hike. Outside of the main corridor (North & South Kaibab and Bright Angel Trails), the only ways in and out of the canyon are extremely challenging. They are a substantial step up from the corridor trails, often requiring you to step up huge rocks, deal with steep drops and exposure, and are not as well-maintained. My advice? For popular routes, enter the lottery. You’ll likely get AN itinerary this way (may not be your first choice). If you’re doing something that’s not typical in the canyon, you must speak with a ranger. In my experience, this process is very simple. Rangers want to know what your experience level is and what you are doing. You’ll get a timeslot to call a special number when you enter the lottery and get your result.
