Secret Tips for Solo Female Hikers

Hiking solo should be an empowering, self-reflecting experience. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t a little daunting to get into! The most important thing to remember is to do what makes YOU feel safe outside. There are risks you can control - being prepared, checking the weather, doing your research. I like to use these steps to address the mental objections I may feel when doing something alone. Example: What if I run into wildlife? Well, I know what to do. I looked up how to respond to the wildlife in the area, I’m carrying proper protection, and making noise on quiet trails. The what-ifs are what stop us from getting out there and trying. If we’re prepared to go on a solo hike as a woman or queer person, then we can stand in our own power when our mind runs wild with what-ifs. There are always going to be things we can’t control, anywhere in life. But we shouldn’t let those things stand in the way of our right to get out and try. Be aware. Be prepared. Do your homework. And remember, if something doesn’t feel right, you have every right to lean into that feeling and turn around.
