First, if you’re traveling into the mountains along I-70 on a weekend you want to keep these hot tips in mind. Westbound sees traffic from Friday afternoon through Friday evening. AND Saturday from around 7 AM until 12 pm. Eastbound traffic starts to build at the Eisenhower Tunnel around 11 am on Sundays. It stays thick and builds through 3 PM. Budget at least an extra 1 hour for traffic if you’re going to leave during the above times and you’re traveling to Silverton or further. Remember, it’s always important to visit the outdoors with respect. Leave the area better than you found it. Pack out all of your trash (including dog poo - carry that with you!) and stay on marked trails. Gotta do my due diligence here, but hiking in Colorado is dangerous if you’re not armed with a few quick safety tips. Thunderstorms plague the mountains every afternoon in summer and lightning strikes can kill hikers. Be below treeline (where the trees grow) by 11 am to avoid dangers. Always pack plenty of layers.
