Your Grand Canyon packing list will make or break your backpacking trip. Words really don’t describe what it’s like to spend a few nights below the rim. I keep on coming back to this landscape - tackling some of the toughest trails and routes in the canyon. Be prepared! The Colorado River is SILTY! Regular water filters (sadly, especially the ultra-lightweight variety) DO CLOG! Pack Alum or P&G Purifier Packets as a backup for water treatment while backpacking in the Grand Canyon. For alum, you’ll need around ⅕ of a teaspoon per gallon of water. If you’re using a Sea to Summit 10L collapsible bucket, you need ½ tsp per 10L of water. Mix vigorously and allow it to set for 5 minutes, then stir twice. It takes around 1.5 hours for the silt to settle. You can pre-mix with a liter of water beforehand for faster results (I haven’t personally tried this). For the P&G product, dump the packet into 10L of water, stir, let it sit and it should settle in 30 minutes. I run that through a filter again just to ensure that the grit is all out, but technically the water is purified as well with the packet. My advice? For popular routes, enter the lottery. You’ll likely get AN itinerary this way (may not be your first choice). If you’re doing something that’s not typical in the canyon, you must speak with a ranger. In my experience, this process is very simple. Rangers want to know what your experience level is and what you are doing. You’ll get a timeslot to call a special number when you enter the lottery and get your result.
