Today we explore Reed Gold Mine in North Carolina, the site of the first documented gold discovery in the United States and one of the most important places in early American mining history. From the moment we arrive, it’s clear this isn’t just a historic stop, it’s a preserved window into the beginning of gold mining on the East Coast. We walk through the museum displays, check out impressive gold nuggets from the area, and look at beautifully preserved historic equipment including crushers, pumps, copper mercury plates, smelting tools, crucibles, and an old Wilfley table. If you enjoy old mining technology, this place has some of the best preserved equipment displays you’ll find. The story behind Reed Gold Mine is just as fascinating as the artifacts. In 1799, 12-year-old Conrad Reed found what turned out to be a massive gold nugget in Little Meadow Creek, kicking off America’s first gold rush. The area became known for producing huge nuggets, including famous “potato-sized” pieces and even larger finds weighing many pounds. On this tour, we also head underground to see the old workings, timbering, shafts, quartz stringers, and the kind of conditions miners faced while chasing gold by candlelight with hand tools. One of the biggest mysteries of the mine is that the creek produced enormous gold nuggets, while the underground quartz veins don’t seem to explain where all that coarse gold came from. If you love hard rock mining, underground mine tours, historic gold camps, ore geology, and real mining stories, Reed Gold Mine is absolutely worth seeing. #goldmining #geology #earthscience For more info please email or call: Email: info@MBMMLLC.com Phone: 360-595-4445 Website: http://www.mbmmllc.com/ eBay: https://www.ebay.com/usr/mtbakerminingandmetals Patreon: http://www.patreon.com/MBMMLLC Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MBMMLLC Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mbmmllc/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/MBMMLLC
