His journey takes him to Monteponi, one of the island’s most significant mining sites, where he discovers hauntingly deserted smelters, towering ruins, and old mining equipment left to decay. At Porto Flavia, Jason learns how Sardinia’s valuable ore was shipped to Belgium for refining in the early 20th century. However, his adventure takes an unexpected turn when he stumbles upon an accidentally discovered cave system inside a mine! Originally thought to be a ventilation shaft, miners blasted into an enormous underground cavern filled with some of the most breathtaking stalactites, stalagmites, and barite crystal formations Jason has ever seen. Though the entire tour is in Italian, Jason does his best to walk us through the geological processes that formed these spectacular underground structures. While navigating the twisting roads and stunning landscapes of Sardinia, Jason also experiences the challenges of filming in Italy, from strict filming regulations to unexpected tour cancellations. But despite the setbacks, this video captures a fascinating blend of history, geology, and exploration.
