Planar Red

The Avantone Planar Red is a $499 open-back planar that’s genuinely one of the strangest headphones I’ve heard—mostly because the soundstage is insanely narrow for an open-back. The tuning is weird (bass roll-off, uneven treble), but it’s not egregiously terrible and it does have some punch around that mid-bass hump.

Pros

  • +Extremely narrow stage if you specifically want a studio-monitor-like presentation
  • +Surprisingly punchy bass for what extension it has
  • +Wide suspension strap distributes weight well

Cons

  • -Narrowest open-back soundstage I’ve heard; imaging suffers
  • -Bass rolls off below ~50 Hz
  • -Treble and mid tuning are uneven/quirky
  • -Detail doesn’t match the $499 price to me
