In this cozy little 3-day studio project, I brought you along while me, Tristan, and my sister Ashleigh designed and prototyped a matcha-inspired 3D-printed lamp (inspired by a chasen—aka the bamboo matcha whisk). I’ve been loving that trend where people only use tiny lamps in the corners of their space, so we wanted to make our own “random light idea” that felt warm, cute, and a little different. We sketched shapes, argued (lovingly) about whether our early versions looked like a hot air balloon or a bell pepper, and eventually started modeling from the whisk stand shape so it actually made sense. I also shared a closer look at the Bambu Lab A1 Mini on my desk (plus the AMS unit for multi-color printing), because I know so many of you ask how to get into 3D printing. We ran into real-life print failures (layer-by-layer support matters so much), tweaked the design, and kept iterating until we got a fully assembled prototype with a really soft, warm glow. The biggest takeaway: setbacks are part of the process—if you keep experimenting, you’ll learn a ton, and you’ll end up with something you’re genuinely proud to display in your cozy space.
