Business numbers demystified

Why are there so many business numbers? In Canada, you may get an account number and client number with your provincial corporate registry. After that, you may get a business registration number when you register a business name. You'll also get a PST vendor account number and then a CRA federal business number that may then get you a GST and payroll number as well. Some of these numbers are very important, others are not.
