The Smithsonian Natural History Museum is the nation's storehouse of its greatest national treasures. It has well over 100 million specimens. Only a very small percentage of it is on display. It has free admission and is open 364 days a year. On average, about 3.9 million folks visit it making it the most-visited museum in the United States. It Opened in 1910 and was one of the first Smithsonian buildings constructed exclusively to hold the national collections and research facilities. The museum is administered by the Smithsonian Institution. The main building has an overall area of 1.5 million square feet with 325,000 square feet of exhibition and public space and houses over 1,000 employees.
