The National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), colloquially known as the Blacksonian, is a Smithsonian Institution museum located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.. It was established in 2003 and opened its permanent home in 2016 with a ceremony led by President Barack Obama. This museum is a part of the Smithsonian group which consists of 20 separate museums and galleries as well as the National Zoological Park. They are free and most are located on the national mall in Washington, DC to include the most popular. A total of 17 of these collections are located in Washington D.C.. The birth of the Smithsonian Institution can be traced to James Smithson. The Smithsonian Institution Building (also known as "The Castle") was completed in 1855. The Smithsonian has roughly 137 million objects in their collections, including works of art, natural specimens, and cultural artifacts. The Smithsonian museums are visited by over 25 million people every year. The museum's collections tell the history of the planet and are a record of human interaction with the environment and one another. Most are close to metro stops, and are generally open for most of the year from 10-5:30pm.
