The untold story of United Kingdom

About This Video

In this video, I share some interesting (and a little mysterious) stories from the United Kingdom—mainly around two famous London landmarks: Trafalgar Square and Tower Bridge. I talk about how Trafalgar Square became a symbol of victory after the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, where the British Navy led by Admiral Lord Nelson defeated the combined forces of France and Spain. I also describe what you’ll see there today—Nelson’s Column, the stone lions, and why people still gather there for celebrations, events, and even protests. Then I move to Tower Bridge and explain why it was designed to open in the middle—London was growing, people needed to cross the River Thames, but ships still had to pass. I cover how it was built between 1886 and 1894 and originally used steam-powered engines to lift like a drawbridge. One of my favorite moments is the 1952 story where a bus driver, Albert Gunton, had to speed up and jump the gap when the bridge started opening—he landed safely and became a hero. I also share the “pigeon army” story from Trafalgar Square and the ghost tale of Jack Baines said to haunt Tower Bridge at night.
