Some words of wisdom from Ty The Dog Guy. Be sure to check out Molly Rouse's upcoming discussion on this issue too-- which will be a deeper dive into these issues. From Ty: "I think the biggest mistakes people make in hiring are: - not having strong margins. They think that charging $125 is a lot but when they’ve got the expenses of an employee it’s not even close - not having any systems. They want employees to follow them around and to just learn and then be good at the job. - not having good customer acquisition. They’re too busy so they add someone. But maybe they weren’t too busy for a second person and now they have no marketing they can turn on as needed to bring in some degree of reliable leads/sales - no sales process. They’ve been winging it to warm referrals. And now they need to cast a wider net with an employee on board and it turns out they weren’t as good at sales as they thought - don’t pay enough. Don’t offer enough incentives to work for them rather than a call center. Dogs are such a passion thing that some trainers can get by paying and offering less for a time because some people desperately want to work with dogs. But once some of the shine wears off and they’re making crap wages with long hours and hard work these trainers can’t keep help. This one goes back to margin"
