In this one I’m revisiting Intel’s Core Ultra 9 285K, because the launch reviews were… mixed, to put it politely. Intel went conservative: cooler, more stable, but it didn’t really land the performance people expected—especially after the monster that was the 14900K. Fast forward a few months and Intel’s quietly rolled out a BIOS update with “200S Boost”, which is basically a firmware-level uplift to push the chip closer to what it should’ve been from day one, without you having to mess about with manual tuning. I ran the 285K through my usual test suite on an ASUS Z890 Hero with an RTX 4090, Noctua NH-D15, and 48GB of Corsair CUDIMM DDR5. I tested three scenarios: Intel defaults (to mimic more mid-range boards), Intel 200S Boost (the new official uplift), and ASUS MCE (which removes Intel power limits and makes the chip look faster out of the box). The takeaway is simple: 200S Boost does move the needle—think small but real gains in synthetics, a nice closing of the gap in Blender, and gaming results that are basically neck-and-neck once you’re at 1440p/4K. If you’re purely gaming, AMD X3D still edges it, but if you do anything else—streaming, editing, rendering—the 285K becomes a genuinely solid all-rounder again.
