Staying productive has basically been my villain origin story since elementary school—doodles turned into neat notes, which turned into bullet journaling, which turned into me trying every productivity app under the sun. In high school I even recorded hundreds of screen timelapses and watched them back at night because “what’s measured is managed”… and then I realized I might’ve been a little crazy and dropped it in college. But as a CS major, I kept thinking: if measurement helps, why not build something smarter than a timelapse? So over winter break (between Christmas dinners and family meetups), I gave myself a ridiculous deadline: 3 days to build a native Mac productivity app from scratch. I set rules—no AI agents writing it for me, and I had to actually use it every day. The app became “Mojo,” an orb that sits on the side of my screen and intervenes when I open distracting sites. I have to justify why I deserve access, and if I can’t make a case fast enough, it can close the tab or grant a short break. Along the way I ran into the real stuff: messy state management, edge cases, bugs, and trade-offs like speed vs accuracy for LLM decisions. The big takeaway: the MVP matters—don’t chase perfection, just get started and move closer to the person you want to become.
