About This Video

Hey y’all—what’s good, what’s Gucci. In this video I’m breaking down my personal top 5 microphones for vocal recording under $100 (or right around that price if you shop used). This list is for the bedroom producer, the artist who’s just getting started, or anybody who wants professional, high-quality vocals without spending thousands on gear. I talk through what each mic is best at, why the pickup pattern matters, and how to choose something that works in a real-world room that might not be perfectly treated. I start with the Audio-Technica AT2020, which I’ve owned for years and recorded a ton on—it’s plug-and-play, cardioid, and gives you that crisp, bright vocal sound. Then I get into the Shure SM58 and SM57: both dynamic, super durable, focused on the midrange, and great when you need solid rejection (especially for live sound). My favorite mic on the whole list is the Rode NT1A—clear, low self-noise, and it’s one of those “you don’t need much” mics (Bryson Tiller’s “Don’t” is a perfect example). I wrap it up with the AKG P120, which gives you extra control with a pad and low-cut filter for cleaner recordings.
