I hopped back on YouTube live for the first time in forever (it’s been like a year+) just to hang with y’all, show love, and finally play some music from the project I’ve been working on for literally years. I ran through a few songs that are headed to the album—“Come Around,” “Up (From the Bottom),” “Free,” and an unfinished one called “Dreams Come True.” I talked about how I’ve been approaching writing differently too: I treat songs like affirmations now, because I really believe you have to watch what you put into lyrics. If words can come to life, then I’d rather write positivity and speak what I want to feel and experience.
After that, we got into beatmaking on Maschine in real time—starting with a “wolf sample” idea y’all threw at me. I showed my whole messy process: finding the sound, converting it to WAV (because Maschine can be picky), chopping it, getting it on-grid, and turning something weird/obscure into something melodic. I also explained how I usually work: I’ll often start ideas in Logic, then bring chords into Maschine to build drums and tighten the groove. We ended up sampling more music (with y’all giving suggestions), and even when the session got glitchy, I kept pushing—because that’s really what building is.
