About This Video

Hey y’all—today I’m in Logic Pro 11 making something a little different: I build a whole R&B vibe from scratch and then I write the song live… about sweet potato pie. I literally named the session “sweet potato pie” because I had one baking in the oven, and the smell had me inspired. I start by hunting for a simple chord idea, then I shape the sound while I’m creating—especially the low end—so the track already feels good before I even get deep into arranging. Once the foundation is there, I get into my go-to plugins. Y’all know I love Waves—like, it’s my favorite—so I grab a Q4 to cut the highs and help the bass feel more like a true bass. From there it turns into a full songwriting moment: hook ideas, funny lines, and then I lock in the concept—sweet potato pie as the “lady” in the song, but I keep it smooth and not overly aggressive. Then I record vocals right away. I use the Waves V-Comp for compression and a Waves RVerb with a chamber preset, mainly for vocal confidence while tracking. After that I add a little pad, bring the bass into the chorus, and play back what we’ve got so far. Easy peasy—beat, lyrics, and a vibe.
