I had a 12-hour layover in Istanbul with Turkish Airlines, and I basically treated it like a tiny, dreamy day trip. After I got through customs/immigration, I spotted a photo booth on the way to the tourist desk and found out I was eligible for a free city tour because my layover was 8+ hours. I registered, got my ID tag, hopped on the bus around 4:00 p.m., and about 40–45 minutes later we were in the city. We went straight to the Blue Mosque area, saw the obelisk, and then I had the most me moment ever—getting totally distracted by a cute baby and (even more importantly) realizing Istanbul is basically paradise because I saw so many cats in just a couple hours. During our free time, I tried Turkish ice cream (I had no cash, but thankfully card worked), wandered around on my own, and made my way to the Grand Bazaar where I saw knockoff brands plus tons of spices and teas. I also share a practical detail for fellow Filipinos: I needed a visa, and my e-visa application was straightforward—about $20 and emailed to me quickly. We ended the tour with a delicious kofta dinner, a quick Bosphorus stop, and then I headed back to the airport around 9:30 p.m., took an airport shower to reset, and wrapped up my little Istanbul layover adventure.
