Hey! Hey! It's caramelly! šŸ¤ I have been in a rut (yet again) and this time, it's because I feel like I've hit a plateau in my PhD. My routines are becoming repetitive and I felt like I am not actively learning anymore. So I decided to make a personal curriculum to get out of it. To anyone who's also in a rut, I hope this video will be helpful (and relatable) for you! About This Video

Hey guys, it’s Melly. In this video I’m basically taking you with me while I ā€œun-plateauā€ my PhD life by making a personal curriculum. I’m a fourth year physics PhD candidate (soft condensed matter), and my schedule is flexible, but the downside is my routine started feeling painfully repetitive—go to the lab, run an experiment, redo it because it failed, analyze data, redo it again… and I realized I wasn’t actively learning the way I should be. So I built myself a structure on purpose, because in grad school there’s so much self-learning, and if you don’t have a goal + timeframe, you can really feel doomed. I walk through my exact checklist: (1) pick your interests and goals, (2) split them into ā€œmajorsā€ (research-related) and ā€œminorsā€ (extracurriculars), (3) develop a syllabus (yes, I asked ChatGPT for help and then edited it), (4) gather references (Google Scholar is your friend), and (5) make a real schedule + homework + deadlines to stay accountable. My majors are things like statistical mechanics and soft matter topics, and my minors are Korean 101 and intro to content creation (because I want to take YouTube seriously and reach 5,000 subs). The whole point is to make learning fun again—without the pressure of grades—while still being consistent and not overwhelming yourself.
