My War On Rockwool

Rockwool is the industry standard for starting seeds in hydroponics. But should it be? In this video I'm making two arguments against rockwool — one for growers, and one for everyone else. For growers: rockwool is genuinely difficult to manage. It swings from waterlogged and anaerobic to bone dry with almost no middle ground, and algae colonizes it fast. It's not actually a great way to start seeds — it just has a reputation that nobody questioned. For everyone else: rockwool is spun basalt rock and industrial slag — essentially building insulation repurposed for horticulture. It biodegrades extremely slowly, the fibers splinter into your skin, and the dust is harmful to breathe. There are better options. Instead I start all my seeds in coco coir — and I'll show you exactly why it solves every problem rockwool creates. Better moisture management, natural air pockets, pH buffering, clean root removal at transplant, and it's made from coconut husks that were already agricultural waste. I also use plant collars in my net cups to eliminate algae at the surface and stop humidity from affecting transpiration at the stem.
