Lecture series «On collaborations»: 019 Ghent

Collective working methods are regaining importance in European architectural discourse—even though this form of work is not new. In two lectures at the Institute of Architecture, we therefore ask to what extent these collectives can be understood as an alternative to traditional office structures and whether they even have the potential to broaden the field of architectural practice and expand into other areas. What are the potentials, challenges, and limitations of these fluid networks? How do shared responsibility, decision-making, and topics and content influence each other in the workplace? To what extent do these alternative forms of organization also differ in conceptual, productive, and socio-economic terms — e.g., working conditions or certain values — from hierarchically structured offices? 019 is organized as a loose network, works without rigid hierarchies, and views its architectural production as temporary, experimental, interdisciplinary, and process-oriented. Their architecture consists of social, political, and cultural installations that arise from a collective energy. This open, sometimes unfinished laboratory is sometimes also irritating, disruptive interventions that challenge our established practice and make us think.
