Hello! Today we are doing some soil blocking and winter sowing in plastic jugs to show you two ways to get sowing early! Early spring planting means transplanting 3-4 week old seedlings into the garden, under cover, 6-8 weeks before your last spring frost. Look for varieties that will finish within 8 weeks of transplant, or be well enough established to handle heat like cabbages. Here's a list of veggies and flowers that like to grow in the early spring, or need to be started early in zones 5-7a Start Early February: Onions, Leeks, Hot Peppers, cabbage, broccoli Mid February: Perennial herbs (oregano, thyme, lavender, rosemary) Gooseberry, Celery (succession plant all growing season) Mid to Late (repeat in 2 weeks): These will be the 1st wave to go out under cover, giving an extra 4 week shoulder to season. Wait for soil to warm to 50F to transplant and 45F to direct seed. kale, kohlrabi, bok choy, raab, radicchio, lettuce (leaf), spinach, arugula 0:56 How to know when to start cool season crops 3:04 Soil Blocking, why? 6:53 What can you plant in February?
