Itron — the company behind a third of all smart meters in North America — just told the SEC that hackers got into their internal systems. The breach was contained to corporate IT, but it raises a bigger question about utility-vendor supply chains. Itron was notified of the intrusion on April 13, 2026, and filed an 8-K with the SEC on April 24. They say only corporate systems were hit and customer-hosted platforms saw no unauthorized activity. No ransomware group has claimed credit. Investigation is ongoing. With 112 million meters deployed across 7,700 utilities in 100 countries, Itron is exactly the kind of trusted middleman attackers target to reach the customers behind it.
