Scattered Spider Hacker Arrested in Finland, Charged in Casino Breaches #cybersecurity #mgm

A 19-year-old alleged Scattered Spider member has been arrested in Finland and faces federal charges in the US for his alleged role in breaching major casinos and tech companies. According to BleepingComputer, Peter Stokes, a dual US-Estonian citizen who allegedly used the alias "Bouquet," was detained at a Finnish airport while trying to board a flight to Japan. Federal prosecutors allege he was involved in at least four Scattered Spider operations dating back to 2023, when he was sixteen. Scattered Spider is a loosely organized group of mostly teenagers and young adults known for social engineering — calling help desks, impersonating employees, and running SIM swaps. They reportedly gained access to MGM Resorts in September 2023 by calling MGM's IT help desk and impersonating an employee found on LinkedIn, causing roughly ten days of disruption across Las Vegas. Caesars had been breached weeks earlier and reportedly paid a $15 million ransom. Tyler Buchanan, a Scottish national and alleged member, pleaded guilty last week. Finland is now reviewing the US extradition request for Stokes.
