How the Mirai Trio Formed and Took On VDoS (Part 2 of 6)

The Mirai trio formed in 2016: Paras Jha plus Josiah White and Dalton Norman, three guys in three different states. They built a new kind of IoT botnet and aimed it at the king of DDoS-for-hire. While the trio was building Mirai, Brian Krebs was running his own deep investigation into VDoS, the dominant booter service of the previous four years. In September 2016 Krebs published his exposé naming two 18-year-old Israeli teenagers, Itay Huri and Yarden Bidani, as the likely operators. Within hours of the piece going live, Israeli police arrested both of them. Their passports were seized; they got 10 days of house arrest and a 30-day internet ban. Meanwhile Mirai's design itself was a competitive weapon: when it infected an IoT device, its code actively killed any competing botnet software already on it, like the older Bashlite.
