Dell confirmed this week that its own preinstalled SupportAssist software is the cause of widespread blue-screen crashes on Dell and Alienware laptops. The fix Dell is recommending: uninstall it. The trigger was a late-April update to the Dell SupportAssist Remediation service (version 5.5.16.0). Once installed, the service crashed roughly every 30 minutes — and because Windows treats it as a critical system process, each crash blue-screened the entire OS and triggered a reboot. Bug-check code 0xEF (CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED), faulting process DellSupportAssistRemedationService.exe. Multiple users analyzed their crash dumps with Microsoft's WinDbg before Dell acknowledged the issue on its forums on May 13th. Dell's recommended workaround is to uninstall the Remediation service via Settings - Apps; forum users have also reported success disabling it through the Windows Services panel.
