A Chinese aerospace engineer allegedly impersonated American researchers for five years, emailing employees at NASA, the military, and universities requesting restricted software and source code — and in some cases, targets sent it. Song Wu was allegedly an engineer at AVIC, a state-owned Chinese conglomerate that builds military aircraft for China's People's Liberation Army. From 2017 to 2021, he allegedly identified targets via LinkedIn, then emailed their colleagues posing as that person to request export-controlled aerospace engineering and computational fluid dynamics software. He faces 14 counts of wire fraud and 14 counts of aggravated identity theft. Song remains at large.
