Ken Fisher, Founder, Executive Chairman and Co-Chief Investment Officer of Fisher Investments, challenges the common fear that rising oil prices inevitably trigger inflation. In Ken’s view, inflation can be described as too much money chasing too few goods and services. Ken states the price of oil going up by itself is not inflationary; however, the creation of money in excess of the growth of goods and services is. Ken explains that while high gas prices are certainly unpleasant for consumers, they don’t shrink GDP (Gross Domestic Product). Instead, it rearranges where the money flows in the economy. Ken clarifies that consumers often shift their discretionary expenses to accommodate the price changes.
