I began by preparing my acrylic paints and large canvas. I mixed my greens and blues to create the hues I wanted for the forest. I then started blocking in the large shapes - the sweeping canopy of the tall trees and the surrounding undergrowth. Once the backdrop was established, I focused on the central figure - a young girl walking alone with a red umbrella. I wanted that splash of vibrant color to really pop against the more muted forest tones. I built up the layers of red paint, adding in details of the umbrella ribs and fabric texture. As I painted the girl, I imagined her feeling joyful and free on her forest adventure, being enveloped in the serenity of nature with no one else around. I wanted to convey that sense of wonder and peace through the light in her step, the tilt of her head, and the curve of her shoulder. Finally, I added mist and wisps of foliage to give a sense of atmosphere and depth. Stepping back, I was satisfied that I had captured the magical feeling I was after - a girl walking joyfully through an enchanted rainforest, shielded by her red umbrella of imagination.
