Just over a year in with the Canon R6 Mark II as my main camera, I wanted to answer the real question: is it actually for you in 2024? I’m a hybrid shooter, so I use this thing for both photos and video, and in this video I keep it simple—no super technical deep dive—just the pros and cons based on how it’s been in my day-to-day workflow. The biggest highlights for me are the autofocus (it’s crazy fast and just “gets it”), the solid build and grip, and the hybrid-friendly control changes—especially the new photo/video switch that lets me bounce between modes without losing settings. On the video side, the no recording limit is long overdue, and full-width 4K 60 is a huge win (especially when competitors crop). The 4K image looks sharp and detailed thanks to oversampling, and while 6K ProRes RAW to an external recorder is possible, it’s honestly overkill for most of my projects. Of course, it’s not perfect. I hate the micro HDMI port, the flashing tally light is distracting, and Canon still not supporting third-party RF autofocus lenses makes it harder for me to recommend to beginners on a tight budget. But overall, the R6 Mark II is an exceptional hybrid camera—and for me, it’s the perfect tool.
