This is the Tecumseh starter gear tool set (part number 670346) I use to expand and remove the retaining clip without mangling it. It makes the job faster and keeps the clip reusable, which is exactly what you want when you’re doing a starter gear swap. You can fight it with regular pliers, but this set saves a lot of time.
