It can be seen in its simplicity and use of classic recipe ingredients: spirit, modifier, bitters, and water. You can stay true classic with a Rye or work on a newer version using Bourbon (in which "new" is still 50+ years old). Personally, the flavor profile is fine but has a bit of a fortified wine finish. I tend to favor a bitter / amaro finish over the wine finish, but to each their own.
