I spent about a week using the iPhone 17e, and yeah—this is going to be a popular phone, but also weirdly underrated. It’s basically Apple’s “just the essentials” iPhone done right: you’re getting very close to the iPhone 17 experience, but for $200 less. The design is simple and clean (single camera, flash, Apple logo), it feels premium with aluminum and frosted glass, and it’s also the smallest iPhone Apple makes right now—honestly a joy to use. The tradeoff is that it looks a bit dated in spots: you’re stuck with the notch instead of Dynamic Island, and you’re missing the camera control button. On the camera side, it’s a single 48MP rear camera with that 2x computational zoom, and it delivers the classic iPhone look—sharp, detailed, great colors, great dynamic range. Low-light is the biggest weakness (more noise/grain and occasional blur), and if you love ultrawide, you’ll miss it here. Performance is excellent because it has the same A19 chip and RAM as the iPhone 17, plus 256GB base storage and a slightly bigger battery. And the best addition this year: MagSafe is finally here, which matters a lot in real life—travel batteries, mounts, kitchen setups, bedside charging—the whole ecosystem just works.
