It all started 4.5 years ago with my first born. We successfully potty trained him by the time he was 18 months old. I thought it might have been a fluke, so I decided to use the same potty training techniques with my second born to see if that was the case. Turns out, it worked again. I purchased our first child's potty just before he was 8 months old. My family and friends thought this was crazy and told me it was too early. My strategy was not to force him to use the potty but to let him get comfortable having it around. I didn't actually start putting him on it on a daily basis until he turned 12 months. As like most children he didn't really like it. I began with just around his bedtime routine, before bath time and just before we put his final diaper before we put him down to sleep. Again, he didn't really like this, as soon as you sat him on the potty he would squirm and try to get off. This didn’t discourage me. I disliked changing diapers, so it was time to get creative and figure out how to potty train early. How did I get my child to stay on the potty when he just wanted to get off? That is easy, I kept him happy and distracted. Well I didn't, a special toy did. There are many possible toys for potty training you can use. We tried a few of his favorite toys with no success. Then my wife bought the handheld bubble maker featured in the video. Boom!! That was it, the bubble maker. He was infatuated by the bubbles coming out and couldn't take his eyes off them. While you are doing this play with the child and keep them happy and engaged. You could try and use your phone or a tablet, but we try to limit screen time so trying different types of toys was the best option for us. This brings me to my next tip, PATIENCE. Potty training a 1 year old boy is not an easy task. You are going to need to have some patience. The longer you are able to keep the child on the potty, the better chance they will use it, don’t give up after 5 minutes. We have had days where we wait 45 minutes and other days where he goes as soon as he sits down. Ok, there are many tricks to potty train a boy, and there are many early potty training tips, but we found this to be the game changer. It almost made potty training a baby easy. Use a squeeze bottle and drizzle warm water below the belly button. After having the little guy sit on the toilet for almost 30 minutes some days, I was like how the heck has he not peed yet? He pees every 5 minutes when he's not sitting on the potty. We all heard the myth about hot water on the hand making you need to pee, so we incorporated that idea into warm water just below the belly button and Kazaam, he peed immediately. Next Tip, after the magic happens make sure you show excitement and praise them. I think this is a big part of the success we had. We made sure he acknowledged he did something we liked and over time he would clap his hands and get excited on his own when he used the potty. The next tip was to start them early. We had success starting at 12 months. I think you could even start earlier but it’s when the time is right for the parents, as you will be putting in the extra time to train your child to use the potty. This was not mentioned in our video but the last and final tip that I can give is, PERSISTENCE. You will need to be constant and continuous with the routine. Once you start potty training a 1 year old boy, make sure you are using these potty training hacks at least once every day and gradually increase the frequency as they get more comfortable. We found the best potty for potty training was the Fisher-Price learn-to-flush potty. It has some great features such as realistic toilet elements, raised potty-ring and toddlers are rewarded with fun lights and sounds when successfully used.
