Why I Stopped Going Treatment-Free (And My Bees Started Surviving)

When I first started beekeeping, I experimented with going treatment-free, hoping my bees could survive naturally. But over time I noticed a pattern: colonies would build up well early in the season and then struggle going into fall and winter. Losing colonies slowed down the growth of my apiary and made it harder to build strong overwintered hives. Eventually I decided to start monitoring mite levels and treating with oxalic acid when needed, and the difference was noticeable. My colonies stayed stronger later into the season, winter survival improved, and I was able to grow my bee yard much faster than when I was relying on treatment-free management.
