Blockchain has always been a very intimidating concept to me. It’s so closely tied with Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, and all these other buzzwords that many talk about on a surface level. It seemed like tech bros and finance bros combined - so I’ve mostly stayed away. But about a year ago, one of my college professors reached out and told me he was working on a start up (Reach) that would help software developers create applications on the blockchain - decentralized applications (DApps). It would be a platform consisting of a compiler, a programming language, and a deployment tool that would make it easier and safer for developers to create blockchain applications. Turns out - blockchain is actually pretty cool. I’m so excited to be partnering with Reach and Algorand to create a free YouTube series that tackles how to create decentralized applications with blockchain technology. In 10 Days of Blockchain, you’ll learn what a blockchain is, build a decentralized application, and deploy it to the Algorand blockchain. With Day 0 specifically, we'll break down all the blockchain buzzwords into English - think bitcoin, transactions, decentralized apps, and blockchain itself. Thank you for watching! ✅ NOTE: Reach documentation at the time of your viewing may be slightly different than when I recorded. When in doubt, follow the documentation, and if you have questions, connect with the Reach community in Discord. ⛓ Discord Community! Reach HQ: https://discord.gg/reachsh Got a question? About This Video

The only thing more intimidating than tech and finance is tech and finance combined… so yeah, blockchain used to feel super unapproachable to me. In Day 0 of my 10 Days of Blockchain series, I’m breaking the buzzwords down into actual English: centralization vs decentralization, what a “ledger” really means, and how blockchain is basically a shared, constantly-updated record across a network—not one magical server somewhere. I start with a simple example: working on a file locally vs putting it on Google Drive. Even if you can edit from anywhere, it’s still centralized because the “best” version lives in one place. Then I take that idea to the extreme: what if every machine had the most up-to-date copy and validated changes together? That’s the mental model you need for Bitcoin (a decentralized currency), and it’s also how blockchain works under the hood: blocks contain transactions, and as more blocks get added, it gets harder to rewrite history. Finally, I zoom out to DApps (decentralized applications). Transactions don’t have to be money—they can be any state change, like incrementing a counter. And because blockchain dev can require specialized languages and a lot of ramp-up, I introduce Reach and Algorand (our sponsors) and explain how Reach lets you build once and deploy to multiple chains. Next video: we set up the environment and start building.
