Teaching a 3 Year Old to Swim | Simple Swim Lesson Parents Can Do at Home Welcome to our live swim lesson with 3-year-old Rose πŸ’™ In this swimming lesson, I take you step-by-step through a basic learn to swim process that parents can try at home (with proper supervision). This class focuses on building confidence, independence and strong foundations β€” all in a positive, respectful way. Every child learns at their own pace. Our goal is not to rush β€” it’s to gently guide. 🌊 The Learn to Swim Process In this lesson, we work through the foundations of swimming: πŸ’¦ 1. Water Familiarisation Helping your child feel comfortable in the water through play, movement and gentle exposure in shallow water. Being in shallow water helps children feel relaxed and in control. πŸ’¦2. Breath Control Learning to hold your breath and control breathing β€” is a crucial safety skill. By using a fish face or a balloon face we encourage breath control for the count of 5 or 10. Using adult demonstrations is essential. Practice both with and without the use of goggles. πŸ‘Ά 3. Submersion Gradual, relaxed submersions when the child is ready β€” never forced. Encouraging self-submersion is best practice. Encourage children to "monkey grip" along the pool edge and submerge underwater while recovering on the side of the pool. ⭐ 4. Floating Back and front floating with support to develop balance and body awareness. Remember floating is the basis of all learn to swim. You can practice floating in shallow water and then venture out into deep water. 🏊 5. Propulsion Simple kicking and arm movements to begin moving independently through the water. During the early learning stages the propulsive skills will be quite basic. BUT, if children have developed strong floating skills, then all propulsive movements will easily move children from A to B. Performing 10 kicks with a swim around, back to the safety of the step, is an ideal way to practice. These five stages build strong, confident swimmers from the very beginning. πŸ’› Respect the Individual Child Every 3-year-old is different. βœ”οΈ Follow their readiness βœ”οΈ Keep learning positive and encouraging βœ”οΈ Celebrate small wins βœ”οΈ Never force skills before they are ready Confidence grows when children feel safe, supported and capable. 🌟 Encouraging Independence We encourage Rose to independently: * Submerge her own face * Monkey around the perimeter of the pool * Push and float off the ledge over deep water independently * Try skills before we assist When children learn to do things for themselves, they build confidence both in and out of the water. πŸ›Ÿ Safety First β€” Always * Always provide close adult supervision * Stay within arm’s reach even for confident swimmers * Use appropriate environments * Never leave a child unattended near water Swimming is a life skill β€” and supervision is non-negotiable. Learning to swim is a journey. With patience, positivity and consistency, you can help your child build water confidence that lasts a lifetime.
