Solstice in Svalbard - Midnight Sun in the Norwegian Arctic

Solstice. The longest day of the year - when the sun sits high in the sky and shines longest and brightest. Back in 2018, I had the chance to experience the solstice while leading guided tours to the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, high in the northern arctic. For weeks on end, the sun never dropped below the horizon. It's a magical experience and worth the trek north. With a population of 2,500 people, the capital of Longyearbyen is the world's northernmost city. It's a quirky and eclectic gateway to the wonders of the arctic landscape that surround it. Teeming with wildlife like migrating birds, polar bears, arctic fox, walrus, and whales, you'll find something to enjoy at every turn. It was the only time I've experienced solstice in the Arctic and hope to one day experience it again. You would imagine that sleeping under the midnight sun would be challenging but you quickly adjust to the change. In no time at all, you'll be soaking up the afternoon rays and sneaking away to enjoy the endless dusk light.
