100 Mile Race Shoes

How many shoes does it take to train for a 100-mile Mountain Ultramarathon? No way around it... Training and racing a 100 miler requires a lot of time on the feet and, of course, a lot of shoes. My 6-month training and racing for the 2023 UTMB ultramarathon took about a dozen shoes from start to finish. Whether you are an ultra-running newbie or a seasoned pro, finding, trying out, training, and racing in the right shoe is a daunting process. For years, I was so nervous to push myself as a runner because I didn't think I knew enough about shoes to do it right. But the truth is that doesn't really matter. Shoes are only a piece of the bigger training and race picture. For myself, I'm partial to Saucony and Altra trail and road running shoes. I came to that conclusion after a lot of trial and error.
