In this video I’m in my creative journal doing something I absolutely love: a horizontal Dutch door spread—aka “horizontal dutch doos” (because my mouth does what it wants, lol). I’m using Smurfs clipart as the theme, and I’m basically building the whole layout around those cute little characters. If you’ve been wanting to try Dutch doors but you’re intimidated by the cutting or the planning, this is a really fun way to ease in because the horizontal style gives you a ton of room to layer without feeling cramped. I walk through how I set up the pages, where I like to place the cut lines, and how I think about balance when I’m stacking elements across multiple “levels” of the spread. The big takeaway is to keep your focal images (in this case, the Smurfs) doing the heavy lifting, then support them with stickers, little accents, and journaling space so it still feels usable. It’s playful, it’s bright, and it’s one of those spreads that looks extra impressive even though it’s totally doable once you commit to the first cut.
