We crossed from mainland China into Macau and instantly felt like our brains couldn’t compute what we were seeing—Portuguese writing next to Chinese characters, UK-side driving, and a city that’s somehow tiny, insanely dense, and also the gambling capital of the world. First challenge: cash. Our cards wouldn’t work at the first ATM and the first taxi we asked was cash-only, which was not on our radar. Once we got sorted (Bank of China ATM saved us), we checked into the Lisboeta Macau and couldn’t believe the value—about £80/$100 for a bright, massive room with proper Lisbon-style tiles and a ridiculously good hotel scent. From there, we did Macau in our usual “reality check” style: a local food court where there wasn’t a single letter of the Latin alphabet, then over to Macau Peninsula to see the real mix of old Portuguese squares, temples, and streets that go from rundown to “wait, are we in Europe?” in about five minutes. We found specialty coffee, a rare plant-based café, tried a pistachio bubble waffle, and even ended up in a bizarrely quiet “mini world” complex (Macau Fisherman’s Wharf). Then we headed back to Cotai for the main event: the Cotai Strip. Big Ben, an Eiffel Tower, the Venetian, gold everywhere, and a vibe that genuinely rivals Vegas—except it’s weirder because it’s all dropped into China. We finished with the Wynn Palace cable car and the free fountain show, which was the perfect Macau finale.
