How to Make Money by Writing Fiction on Medium | 3 Step Plan | Zulie Rane

How can you earn money by writing fiction? Is it even possible on Medium? Ok, what I'm about to tell you is my secret master plan.... how I plan to make money writing fiction on Medium. YES it is possible and I wanted to walk you through EXACTLY how I plan to do it. First, I discuss whether Medium is the right platform to make money by writing fiction. Short answer, yes, but with caveats. The benefits? You earn some money with royalties just if it gets read. Plus, it's super easy to design, set up, and share. The downsides? Medium doesn't "curate" (read: distribute widely) any articles that don't stand alone. So enormous long-form fiction is OK and there examples of this; shorter fiction, comics and satire all perform very well, too. But for those of you who (like me) plan to release chapter by chapter, this isn't good news. Luckily, Medium has this concept of "publications." So the second part of my video is getting into my 3 step strategy to ensure that my chapter posts are actually seen and read by the right people. As an FYI, this is a long-game kind of plan, not a try this today and get rich tomorrow kind of plan. Step 1: think of my ideal fiction audience. create a publication. fill it with stories that would be interesting to my ideal audience. For me, this would be like "what are the best fantasy books of 2020?" or "how to write a good fantasy novel." Step 2: I'd grow that pub until I reached X number of followers. Maybe 500, 1000, it doesn't matter. Step 3: I'd create a SECOND pub where my fiction story is going to live. I'd use Medium's pub newsletter feature to email all the followers of my first pub about the existence of the 2nd, and I'd email them every time I published a new chapter, too. Bonus step 4: I'd reap the rewards to having a dedicated audience reading my stories, earning me $$ through Medium's royalty scheme, and reserve the rights to remove it off the platform, sell it on Amazon, whatever, at any point I want.
