We're editing a blog post live! Jordan Gross, our lucky contest winner Cathy Sissens, and I are all going live today to edit Cathy's story. Jordan is a professional editor, so I'm really excited to see how he elevates this story. Come watch this edit session - Jordan's going to be working on this as he screenshares, and Cathy will get the chance to ask any questions as he goes along. It's going to be an amazing chance to see how a professional editor works on stories to elevate them to the next level. You can and should check out more of Jordan's work at his personal site (jordan-gross.com) as well as his Medium profile (https://jordan-gross.medium.com/). UPDATE: After the session, I wrote down my key takeaways: Title: Stay away from absolutism Write for a specific audience Should be “feel like i’m not alone,” inspiring, informational, and/or entertain Subtitle: Free real estate. Don’t repeat the headline, make it more interesting or engaging. Complete thought Structure: Subheadings matter Sections should be consistent Introduction: Should be gripping and want reader to continue Ending of intro should transition to main body Subsections: Subheader titles should be fully thought out - can write sections out first, then summarize after writing. Each subsection should have argument that backs up title Consistent structure (e.g. starting with a quote) Remove repetition. Ask yourself: “What was I thinking?” during each section. If no idea, maybe remove. Can remove unnecessary explanations with a hyperlink Conclusion: More of a wrap up Is it a conclusion just because it has to be there? Or are you adding something to the piece? Overall: Real aloud Medium looking for chunky paragraphs Real depth and thought-out pieces Gap between formality and conversation when writing Make sure your paragraphs are reader-centric Vary your sentence structure Make sure every sentence adds to your main piece Leave copy edits to the last Put continuous thoughts together
