Kiwi Ears provided me the Ellipse for this review, and it ended up being a lot more source-sensitive than I expected. When it’s paired with a clean solid-state source, it becomes a genuinely decent sub-$100 open-back with good comfort and respectable clarity for the price.
Pros
- +Very comfortable plush headband and soft pads for long sessions
- +Detachable 3.5mm connectors give lots of cable options
- +Can sound clear and energetic with the right clean source
- +Good value around $75–$76 compared to many cheap headphones
Cons
- -Picky with sources; can get boomy and muddy on warmer gear
- -Mids can sound recessed, especially at low volume
- -Soundstage is narrow for an open-back
- -Pad coating may peel over time
