Seventeen-year-olds Lizzie from Birmingham and Stefan from Essex go to Ghana for a week to live with the Adegas, a typical middle-class Christian family. With the Adegas, boyfriends and girlfriends are forbidden, children must do household chores and parents are always right. On the first day, the British teens are up at dawn doing two hours of housework before attending a traditional private school where they must wear the uniform to the satisfaction of their "mother," Vida. Lizzie gets into trouble for falling behind in her schoolwork, while Stefan applies himself under the strict regime. When the teens get closer, Vida becomes uncomfortable with their relationship, especially when she discovers a flirty note Stefan sent to Lizzie. Also, Lizzie reveals too much of her body at the beach for Vida's liking, but as the week progresses, they bond over Lizzie's relationship with her mother. Stefan turns into a productive member of the household and, as the teens head home, they get ready to change their ways.
