The way the world balances water and food production will be critical to feeding a global population expected to reach 10 billion by 2050. Current agricultural water use is unevenly distributed, limiting its full potential to support food production and economic opportunity. In water‑stressed regions, irrigation can at least double crop yields—unlocking major gains in productivity while creating up to 245 million jobs globally, most of them in Sub‑Saharan Africa. Unlocking this potential will require stronger private sector participation, increased investment, and solutions that can scale—from digital tools and data‑driven farming to blended finance and renewable energy–powered irrigation.
