In this video I’m trying to do what every Phoenix overlander does once summer hits—get out of the oven and up into the pines. I head for an incredibly scenic mountain trail that’s less than an hour from the city, climbing up to around 5,000 feet to find cooler temps and a solid campsite. The drive is the whole point here: big views, quick elevation gain, and that “how is this this close to Phoenix?” kind of scenery that makes you forget you were sweating in town an hour ago. Camping on top of the mountain turned into a real adventure, and I walk you through what the trail is like, what I’m looking for in a spot to camp, and how I approach a quick, close-to-home overnighter when I’m trying to beat the heat.
