About This Video

In this video I’m trying to do what every Phoenix overlander does once summer hits—get out of the oven and up into the pines. I head for an incredibly scenic mountain trail that’s less than an hour from the city, climbing up to around 5,000 feet to find cooler temps and a solid campsite. The drive is the whole point here: big views, quick elevation gain, and that “how is this this close to Phoenix?” kind of scenery that makes you forget you were sweating in town an hour ago. Camping on top of the mountain turned into a real adventure, and I walk you through what the trail is like, what I’m looking for in a spot to camp, and how I approach a quick, close-to-home overnighter when I’m trying to beat the heat. If you’re local, this is a perfect reminder that you don’t need a long road trip to get a legit mountain camp. And if you’re planning your own run, I’ll point you toward the tools I use to navigate and keep the setup dialed so you can spend more time enjoying the views and less time stressing the details.
